paesaggio”.

Audiovisual exploration of the city: a sentimental map

“Via Marsala 1-53” is dedicated to a small street of Bologna, via Marsala, one of the many arteries of the city that flows into the heart of the University district.
The project was developed by the students attending the course of Multimedia design within the program of Education and communication of art at the Fine Arts Academy of Bologna, in collaboration with the Educational Department of MAMbo – Museum of Modern Art of Bologna.
The aim of the project was to weave together history, traditions and contemporary life of the street by constructing a sort of “sentimental map” to highlight the identity of the street created over centuries. Traces of the past can be found in Via Marsala, where ancient shops and bars coexist today, and families of Bolognese people and students who come from all over the world and speak different languages live.
In the first step of the project, the students of the Academy collected texts, photographs, sound recordings and videos to tell characters, stories, views and significant anecdotes of via Marsala, giving life to a “virtual walk” on the site www.viamarsala1-53.it
In a second phase, deepening the research on the street, the students designed educational activities and experiences carried out with pupils of “Panzini” secondary school, highlighting the historical, urban, social and cultural aspects of the territory. All the produced materials merged into an exhibition at the Educational spaces of Palazzo Pepoli – Museum of the City of Bologna.
The International Council of Museums – ICOM in 2016 rewarded the project with a special mention: an “excellent practice in the relationship between museum and landscape”.
