Viola Bertini -> Architecture, network of landscapes
The Designing Heritage Tourism Landscapes DHTL network (participated by European and extra-European architecture schools) promotes discussion among different disciplines regarding architectural and landscape heritage and its tourist use. Today, tourist practices can no longer be seen as isolated success stories in the context of southern Europe where there is a shared notion of history. Southern European territories are characterized by an extraordinary naturalistic, historical and archaeological heritage that, frequently excluded from contemporary urban life, should not be interpreted as a problem to be circumscribed in a field of protection, but as a resource taking on new roles in the re-design of the territory and the city. Reasoning on the protection, use and enhancement of heritage and its role in relation to the character of places is a tool for understanding how to establish – through the project – a new dialectic relationship between past, present and future of the city. A dialogue in which the phenomenon of so-called heritage tourism can play a leading role, being an economic engine for the territory and its cities and a driving force for urban regeneration. The balance between sustainable tourism, inclusive tourism and cultural heritage represents the reflection that the DHTL network explores in its activities and products. Futhermore, from the point of view of the architectural and landscape project, DHTLnetwork addresses the relationship between tourism and heritage in an identity perspective, a cultural and economic enhancement of the territory that embraces the European places, especially the southern ones, by highlighting and reinvigorating what can pool Mediterranean communities.

Conference Panel 3 – Heritage belongs to all
La rete Designing Heritage Tourism Landscapes (costituita da scuole di architettura Europee ed extraEuropee) promuove la discussione tra diverse discipline interessate al patrimonio architettonico e paesaggistico e al suo uso turistico. Oggi le pratiche turistiche non possono più essere viste come casi di successo isolati nel contesto dell’Europa meridionale dove invece sussiste una nozione condivisa di storia. Sono territori caratterizzati da uno straordinario patrimonio naturalistico, storico e archeologico che, frequentemente escluso dalla vita urbana contemporanea, non dovrebbe essere interpretato come un problema da circoscrivere in un campo di protezione, ma come una risorsa che assume nuovi ruoli nella ri-disegnazione del territorio e della città. Ragionare sulla tutela, fruizione e valorizzazione del patrimonio e sul suo ruolo in relazione al carattere dei luoghi è uno strumento per capire come stabilire, attraverso il progetto, una nuova relazione dialettica tra passato, presente e futuro della città. Un dialogo in cui il fenomeno del cosiddetto heritage tourism può svolgere un ruolo di primo piano, configurandosi come motore economico per il territorio e le sue città e come forza trainante per la rigenerazione urbana. L’equilibrio tra turismo sostenibile, inclusivo e patrimonio culturale rappresenta la riflessione che la rete DHTL con le sue attività e prodotti esplora, affrontando, dal punto di vista del progetto di architettura e paesaggio, il rapporto tra turismo e patrimonio in una prospettiva di identità, valorizzazione culturale ed economica del territorio che abbraccia i luoghi europei, in particolar modo quelli meridionali, evidenziando e rinvigorendo ciò che può accumunare le comunità che si affacciano sul Mediterraneo.
